Secret of Jap

Sri Krishna Gopal Vyas Ji Maharaj

The primary object of creating "Secret of Jap" is to enlighten people in their way of life and pursuit of self-realization in their quest for good health, peace of mind, prosperity, and happiness.

Guru Maharajji narrated Jap Rahasya (The Secret of Jap) to the devotees of Keshav Ashram International Center, Vedic Sanatan Dharma, in Warrenton, USA:

"Mantra comes from the Sanskrit root-word which means, 'To Take the mind across or to transcend.'  It is an occult formula that was heard in the ether by the rishis and sages of India and such words, when properly intoned, have the power to enlighten the soul, and awaken the Kundalini Shakti.

"Repetition of the mantra is Jap.  In Agni Purana, the description is as follows: 'Ja,' the first syllable, means to stop the round of rebirth, and 'Pa' means to destroy all sins.  Thus, 'Jap' means the process by which sins are removed and rebirth is terminated.  Another description says that remembering the name of God and keeping HIM within out heart is Jap.  Shri Ramkrishna Paramhansa has said that Jap is sitting in a lonely place and repeating the name of God from within.  In all religious and spiritual practices, Mantra-Jap is know as the main focus in order to acquire the necessary discipline for God Realization.

"In the Hindu religion, its practice is followed in the Vedic, Puranic, Smriti, and Tantric traditions, branches of the Hindu philosophy.  Buddhism and Jainism have also adopted it, and in their different methods, Jap is given great emphasis.  Not only these, but the Sufi religion and the Catholics of the Christian faith have also used Jap since ancient times.  In Kriya-Yoga, the practitioners also also agree that Jap is the principal part of their self-study.  In Tapa, Mantra, Raja or Hath Yoga, the practice of nad-anusandhan or listening for the sounds in the ether is explained.  So in reality, nad-anusandhan means listening to the sound which is also a form of Jap.

"In the Karm-kand, a spiritual work of Hindu religion, Jap practice is the main backbone.  By Jap, all sorts of miraculous powers can be obtained. So Lord Krishna has said that it is the best among all the 'Yagyas' or 'Spiritual Pursuits' and He has also said that Jap is HIS very shape or form.  In Shrimad Bhagwad Gita, Chapter 10, 25th verse, it is stated, 'Yagyanam Jap Yegyoham,' which means, 'Among the spiritual pursuits, I am the Jap Yegiya.'

Guru Maharaj Sri Krishan Gopal Vyas ji,a pious soul, one of the greatest Spiritual of this Centuary, resided in Jaipur,Rajasthan,India. He visited many countries including U.S.A,Canada,France etc from time to time, to give Mantra deeksha to his disciples and show path of Self realization to people there.

Sri Vyas ji used to say,”Shabd Brahm hai”that is word is God.The word here refers to Mantra. These mantra are very powerful and God in themselves. He had realized the Divine state in spiritual science. He gave Mantra deeksha to thousands and thousands of People there.

Sri Vyas ji Maharaj also visited Kashav Asharam International centre ,Vedic Sanatan Dharam,in Warrenton,U.S.A,a couple of times,to guide the people there and to give mantra deeksha to the aspirants there. He used to examine soul of the devotees, and after ensuring that the mantra is compatible to his soul,he gave mantra deeksha to him.It was similar to the examination of blood for grouping, for knowing the suitability of the blood for the patient. It is only when the blood tallied with the blood of the patient the blood transfusion is brought into effect. He further used to say that this practice was vanishing from India. There are a few saints in India who follow this practice now.

As Sri Vyas ji used to stress a lot for mantra jap, people in the Asharam, once requested him to give proof of that. The Guru Maharaj ji replied in the affirmative and the next day was earmarked for the purpose. All the inhabitants assembled there. He said that he would reply once only in Hindi.Dr Limaya,a renouned Eye Specialist, who is also his disciple, noted the statement in Hindi,in shorthand and thereafter an English translation was distributed to them.

"Sage Manu (2:87) told that by his experience, it is only through the practice of Jap that a man can attain realization, regardless of whether he performs any other type of Yoga or austerity.  In Mahabharatha, Ashid 44:8, it is said that the best 'Havan' (Fire Sacrifice) is the one done with ahuti (with Mantras), and this is also the opinion of the followers of the Vedic practices.  But on the pathway of devotion, the repetition of the Name assumes more significance than the fire sacrifice.

"Jap is also a scientific spiritual technique, which affects the mind and its intellectual and intiutive faculties.  The practitioner's will power becomes strong, his thinking processes develops extraordinary clarity and discrimination and his intuition becomes clear and pure and his oul becomes enlightened.  Taking note of its indestructible effect, those, who have composed the Shastras, have admired its limitless qualities.  In the 'Linga-Purana' (85/1:24, 25), it is stated, one who does Jap cannot suffer any form of trouble and neither can Yaks, rakshas, pichasas and the bad stars inflict to such a one any trouble.  All sins of the past and of past lives are destroyed by the repetition of Jap which increases happiness and good fortune and gives salvation.

"As soon as Sadhu (saint) begins the practice of Jap, he can realize some sensation in himself, and by its extraordinary power, many changes begin to develop inside.  Evil thoughts begin to subside and the qualities of truth, love, justice, forgiveness, honesty, patience, peace, purity, politeness, discipline, service and generousity begin to arise.  And when the mind is affected, discrimination, precognition, self-realization and wisdom are obtained and the result is that difficulties are assuaged and happiness and peace are the uncheckable fruits.

"When performing Jap, the veil of ignorance will be removed and evil qualities and defects will begin to subside and gradually, the practitioner becomes the image of purity and honesty, and sound character.  He proceeds from deceitfulness to honesty, from darkness to light, from death to immortality, from disappointment to hope, from the limited to the unlimited, from weakness to strength, from hell to Heaven, from the worst to the best and from evit thoughts to Sagacious thoughts.  by the repetition of the mantra, power is attained.

"In Yoga Darshan (4:1), it is clearly mentioned that by mantra repetition, many powers can be obtained, but the best power is the purification of the intuition which is the natural effect of the Jap.  And again, in 1:28, it is mentioned that by doing Jap, the practitioner gradually becomes so enlightened that he reaches the stage of Samadhi.

"Again, in Agni Sutra 29, Maharishi has ordained that during the period of practice, troubles will disappear and then one will realize himself.  And on account of development of the power of his soul, he increases in courage and it appers like a miracle when financial, marital, or other animosities and troubles are easily solved, but it is all on account of Jap.  Not only does the practitioner benefit, but he benefits others as well.

"Those, who have composed the Shatras, have mentioned its special scientific benefits.  What is it?  Like the gross body, the subtle body also has a nervous system and when Jap is begun, a wonderful action takes place in the subtle body.  Science of today has also accepted the power of the word and it is researching many methods to get the benefit from word repetition.  Indian science also used the power of words to develop their spiritual nature so everyone used to practice with faith and belief towards improving oneself, even to the level of superhuman.

"Mantra and its method is still available today and if we follow this science, then man can lift himself beyond the realm of just animal instinct and becomes a man in the real sense of the term.  Everything can be obtained by the constant repetition of the mantra.  The full description of the Mantra Jap can be obtained from the book Mantra Mahavignam.

"Mantra is always beneficial to the practitioner provided the mantra is alive (sidh mantra) and is ordained by someone who is competent to give a mantra.  This may be illustrated by an example that a lighted candle can light another candle but an unlit one can not.  The soul can be enlightened by chanting of an alive mantra.

"What is Yoga? A 'yog' is a meeting of two things.  In spiritual science the word 'yoga' is used only meeting or union of the Atma (soul) with the grace of Almighty God and to obtain this, the chanting of mantra is the easiest method.  This has been amply explained in the above paragraphs."
